O-Rings

An O-ring is an elastomer ring of circular cross-section; placed in a groove and compressed, it seals both static and dynamic connections. Simple, inexpensive and extremely reliable, it is the most widely used sealing element, from hydraulic and pneumatic systems to drinking water fittings, fuel pumps and food equipment. With the right material and the right size it runs maintenance-free for years.

Which material for which application?

• NBR (nitrile) 70 Shore A: hydraulic oil, fuel, water, air. The general-purpose standard.
• FKM (Viton type) 75 Shore A: high temperature, fuels, chemicals, vacuum; the broadest resistance.
• EPDM 70 Shore A: hot water, steam, glycol-based brake fluid, outdoor use. Not for oil.
• Silicone (VMQ): food and pharmaceuticals, very low and high temperatures, FDA compliant; static applications.
• HNBR: the heat and ozone resistant version of NBR; air-conditioning and automotive.
