Product description

Graphite packing is a braided gland packing produced by interbraiding low-sulphur expanded pure graphite yarn, designed for high temperature and high pressure. Graphite's outstanding thermal conductivity, chemical resistance and low coefficient of friction make this packing the standard solution for valves and pumps on steam, hot oil and aggressive chemical lines. It does not score stems or shafts and seals as soon as it is seated.

Features and benefits

  • Very wide temperature range: from −200 °C to +450 °C; up to +650 °C in steam and non-oxidising media.
  • High pressure: up to 250 bar in valves; reinforced types offer even higher mechanical strength.
  • Full chemical resistance: pH 0–14; almost all media except strong oxidisers (nitric acid, chromic acid).
  • Excellent heat dissipation: carries frictional heat away quickly; safe at high shaft speeds.
  • Low friction, easy gland adjustment: long service life, infrequent maintenance.
  • Corrosion-inhibited option: prevents pitting on stainless valve stems.

Types

  • Pure graphite packing: expanded graphite yarn reinforced with cotton or glass fibre; general purpose for valves and pumps.
  • Wire-reinforced graphite packing: Inconel or stainless steel wire reinforcement; the highest pressure and temperature valves, steam turbines.
  • Corner-reinforced (carbon / aramid corners): high-pressure pumps requiring extrusion resistance.

Where is it used?

Steam and condensate valves, hot oil systems, refinery and petrochemical fittings, power plant and boiler valves, paper machines and high-temperature agitators. For water and light media the economical choice is tallow packing; for clean media and food, PTFE Teflon packing.

Sizing and installation

The cross-section is determined by (Box bore − Shaft diameter) / 2. Graphite packing settles slightly after gland adjustment; rings are cut at 45°, installed with joints staggered by 90°, and the gland is tightened gradually. In steam valves, re-tighten after the first heat-up. Reinforced types are for hardened steel stems and housings.

Production and quality

Graphite packing is produced in our own factory; yarn density, section tolerance and sulphur/chloride content are checked on every batch. Shipped from stock, exported to more than 15 countries. From gland packing to gasket sheet, from O-rings to copper washers: cover your plant's entire sealing needs from a single supplier.

Applications

  • High-temperature and high-pressure valves, steam valves
  • Hot oil, steam and condensate lines
  • Refineries, petrochemical plants and power stations
  • Paper mills and hydroelectric plants
  • High-temperature agitators and pumps
  • Expansion joints and boiler fittings

Frequently asked

How do I determine the packing size?
The cross-section equals half the difference between the stuffing box bore and the shaft diameter: (bore − shaft) / 2. For a 60 mm bore and 40 mm shaft, a 10 × 10 mm square section is used. If unsure, send us your dimensions.
What are the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Standard sections ship from stock in boxes from 1 kg. Custom sections, lengths or impregnations are produced on short lead times. We organise domestic and export shipments.

Send us your dimensions and operating conditions; we will recommend the right packing.

Share shaft diameter, stuffing box size, medium, temperature and pressure, and our technical team will get back to you shortly.
