Product description

PTFE packing (Teflon packing) is a soft braided packing produced by interbraiding synthetic yarns impregnated with PTFE dispersion. PTFE's very low coefficient of friction and resistance to almost all chemicals make the packing reliable with aggressive media and at high shaft speeds. Its white colour means it does not stain the product, which is why it is preferred in food and pharmaceutical lines.

Features and benefits

  • Broad chemical resistance: withstands acids, alkalis, solvents and cleaning agents across pH 2–12.
  • Low friction: the PTFE film reduces heat and power loss on the shaft; suitable for high-speed pumps.
  • Clean operation: does not colour or contaminate the medium; suitable for food, beverage and pharmaceutical use.
  • Wide temperature range: retains its properties from −100 °C to +260 °C.
  • Long service life: high wear resistance extends maintenance intervals.

Where is it used?

Lines carrying acids, alkalis and solvents, applications where product purity is critical such as food and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper plants and high-speed centrifugal pumps. It does not score the shaft, does not contaminate the medium and offers a long service life. For water and light media the more economical option is lubricated cotton packing.

Sizing and installation

The cross-section is determined by (Box bore − Shaft diameter) / 2. Because PTFE has a high thermal expansion, do not over-tighten the gland; adjust gradually once operating temperature is reached. Rings are cut at 45° and installed with the joints staggered by 90°.

Production and quality

Impregnation ratio and cross-section tolerance are measured on every batch. Graphited (dark) and non-graphited (white) variants are available; the graphited version improves heat transfer for better performance at high speeds.

Applications

  • Pumps and valves in chemical and petrochemical plants
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical production (clean media)
  • Acid, alkali and solvent lines
  • Pulp and paper industry
  • High-speed centrifugal pumps
  • Water treatment and chemical dosing systems

Frequently asked

How do I determine the packing size?
The cross-section equals half the difference between the stuffing box bore and the shaft diameter: (bore − shaft) / 2. For a 60 mm bore and 40 mm shaft, a 10 × 10 mm square section is used. If unsure, send us your dimensions.
What are the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Standard sections ship from stock in boxes from 1 kg. Custom sections, lengths or impregnations are produced on short lead times. We organise domestic and export shipments.

Send us your dimensions and operating conditions; we will recommend the right packing.

Share shaft diameter, stuffing box size, medium, temperature and pressure, and our technical team will get back to you shortly.
