Product description

Tallow packing (also known as lubricated or greased cotton packing) is a soft braided gland packing made by interbraiding first-grade cotton yarn and impregnating it with a blend of original tallow, paraffin and graphite. The impregnation lets the packing lubricate itself on the shaft, reducing heat build-up and shaft wear during start-up. It is the most widely used and most economical gland packing for pump and valve sealing, and Yaman Tekstil Salmastra produces it in its own factory in 5, 10 and 15 kg spools. The yellow colour in the photos is our standard product; the same packing is also produced as white tallow packing.

Why tallow packing from Yaman Tekstil?

  • First-grade raw materials: long-staple, high-tenacity cotton yarn; original, first-quality paraffin and tallow. No recycled yarn, no cheap oil blends.
  • Skilled workmanship: 40 years of braiding experience; a tight, uniform diagonal braid and an impregnation ratio checked on every batch.
  • Do not compare with Far East products: low-density, lightly impregnated imports harden quickly, score the shaft and need frequent replacement. Our packing stays flexible for years.
  • Direct manufacturer, shipped from stock: we are a factory, not a trader. Standard sections in stock, custom sections on short lead times. Regular exports to more than 15 countries.
  • If you are looking for quality, you are in the right place.

Features and benefits

  • Self-lubricating: the tallow and paraffin impregnation forms an oil film between shaft and packing, reducing the risk of dry running.
  • Flexible and conformable: the diagonal braid lets the rings bed down fully in the stuffing box.
  • Shaft-friendly: soft cotton fibre and graphite protect the shaft surface.
  • Economical: a low-cost alternative to PTFE or graphite packing for water and light media.
  • Easy to install: rings are cut and fitted; the gland is tightened to adjust the seal. No special tools required.

Where is it used?

An economical and reliable solution for pumps handling water and light media, low to medium pressure valves and rotating shaft applications. It is a staple maintenance item in agricultural and irrigation pumps, municipal water plants, ship shafts and engine rooms, cold-water motors and general industry. For acid, alkali or solvent lines we recommend PTFE Teflon packing; for high temperature and pressure, graphite packing.

Sizing and installation

The cross-section is half the difference between the stuffing box bore and the shaft diameter: (Box bore − Shaft diameter) / 2. For a 60 mm bore and 40 mm shaft, use a 10 × 10 mm square section. Rings are cut at 45° to the shaft circumference and installed with the joints staggered by 90°. Hand-tighten the gland first; after start-up, adjust gradually until a few drops per minute leak through. This drip is necessary to cool the packing.

Production and quality

The packing is braided on our own lines in our 1,000 m² covered factory in Kağıthane, Istanbul. Cross-section, density and impregnation ratio are checked and recorded on every batch. Besides standard square sections, we produce custom sections, round sections and pre-cut rings to length.

Packaging and variants

  • 5 kg, 10 kg and 15 kg spools (coils): standard packaging; palletised and export-ready.
  • 1–2 kg boxes: for maintenance teams and distributors.
  • Yellow tallow packing (standard): the product pictured; tallow and paraffin impregnated, the most common type.
  • White tallow packing: the same braid and impregnation quality with a light-coloured (white) lubricant blend; for lines where product contamination must be avoided and markets that specify white packing.
  • Graphited (dark): graphite added; better heat transfer, for muddy and abrasive water.
  • Heavy impregnation: for long storage or applications with a risk of dry running.

Applications

  • Centrifugal and reciprocating water pumps
  • Gate, ball and globe valves
  • Rotating and reciprocating shafts
  • Water, seawater, wastewater and light oil lines
  • Agricultural and irrigation pumps
  • Ship engine rooms, stern tubes and bilge pumps
  • Municipal water and wastewater plants

Frequently asked

How do I determine the packing size?
The cross-section equals half the difference between the stuffing box bore and the shaft diameter: (bore − shaft) / 2. For a 60 mm bore and 40 mm shaft, a 10 × 10 mm square section is used. If unsure, send us your dimensions.
What are the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Standard sections ship from stock in boxes from 1 kg. Custom sections, lengths or impregnations are produced on short lead times. We organise domestic and export shipments.

Send us your dimensions and operating conditions; we will recommend the right packing.

Share shaft diameter, stuffing box size, medium, temperature and pressure, and our technical team will get back to you shortly.
