How to Recognise Quality Gland Packing: Manufacturer vs Trader, Far East Imports vs Factory Product
Published: · 3 min read
Why is there a threefold price difference between two packings sold under the same name? Five ways to tell quality by yarn, impregnation, braid density and traceability, plus a total maintenance cost calculation.

To a purchasing team, all tallow packings look the same in the catalogue: cotton, tallow, graphite, square section. In the field, one lasts a year and the other three months. The difference lies where the label says nothing. This article explains how to judge a packing before acceptance and in the first week, the difference between buying from a trader and from the manufacturer, and why a price comparison with Far East goods is misleading.
1. Yarn: long staple or waste?
First-grade packing is braided from long-staple, high-tenacity cotton or synthetic yarn. Cheap products use recycled, short-staple yarn; the packing fluffs when pulled by hand and breaks easily. Test: cut 20 cm from the spool and stretch it with both hands; quality packing flexes but sheds no fibres.
2. Impregnation: weight and feel
Tallow, paraffin and graphite impregnation lets the packing lubricate itself. Lightly impregnated packing is light and dry; at the same section, the spool weighs less. Test: weigh two samples of equal section and length. A film of lubricant should be felt under the finger, but it should not drip.
3. Braid density
A tight diagonal braid keeps the ring in shape under gland pressure without spreading. A loose braid flattens on first tightening, extrudes from the box and leaks. Test: bend the packing 90°; on a quality product the braid does not open and the core is not visible.
4. Traceability and documents
A manufacturer numbers every batch; section, density and impregnation ratio are on record. If a problem arises, the batch is known. An unlabelled spool from a trader carries none of this. Ask for the ISO 9001 certificate and a test report on request.
5. Consistency
The real proof of quality is receiving the same product on the second and third order. Traders buy from whichever source is cheapest; when the source changes, so does the product. Buying direct from the factory guarantees continuity from the same line and the same recipe.
Why a price comparison with Far East goods misleads
The cost of a pump packing is not just the spool price:
| Item | Cheap import | Factory product |
|---|---|---|
| Spool price | 1 unit | 1.5–2 units |
| Service life | 3–4 months | 12+ months |
| Replacements per year | 3–4 | 1 |
| Labour and downtime cost | 3–4× | 1× |
| Shaft wear risk | High (hard, dry) | Low |
Calculated as annual total cost, first-grade packing is almost always cheaper. Add unplanned stoppages and shaft replacement and the gap widens.
Advantages of buying from the factory
- Manufacturer price: no intermediary margin.
- Custom sections and packaging: 5, 10, 15 kg spools; pre-cut rings in the section and length you need.
- Technical support: the manufacturer recommends the right packing for your medium, temperature and shaft speed.
- Stock and lead time: standard sections from stock, custom sizes on short notice.
- Single supplier: from gland packing to gasket sheet, from O-rings to copper washers, cover your plant's entire sealing needs from one source.
